Aarathi is performed after most pujas and as a final form of worship to the temple Gods at the close of the day. An Aarathi lamp’ wick(s) is soaked in ghee and lit by the Pandit. The Pandit then takes the sacred lamp and offers it to one or more Deities in a spirit of humility and praise, thus enabling the sacred lamp to gather blessings from the Deity(s). As the Pandit offers the sacred lamp to the Deity(s) it is usually accompanied by singing, clapping hands and ringing bells. After the Pandit has honored each of the Deities, the lamp is offered to those present. Chaamoram, a holy fan, is brushed in the air around each of the temple Deities to signifying they can rest now. As a final act Prasadam is offered by the Pandit to those present.

Each aspect of Aarathi is significant as it embodies the five elements of the world. The lamp flame represents fire; the fan represents air; the Deities represent earth; sprinkling or bathing the deities represents water; and the bell represents the Akash (ether). The candle flame represents our limitless spiritual depth. The clapping and the ringing bells helps the devotees clear their minds and focus on the Deity (s).
