Sade Sati is the 7-1/2 year-long period of Saturn (Shani). According to some astrologers, during this time, there may be many challenges in a person’s life and this person may face accidents, sudden failures, job loss, as well as money and health problems. However, some astrologers claim that many people actually achieve a lot of success during the period of Sade Sati. It depends upon a person’s birth chart.
One cycle of Shani Sade Sati is experienced once every thirty years, whereas Saturn mahadasha may or may not be experienced by an individual during this lifetime, depending upon one’s birth moon constellation (Janma nakshatra). Currently, those born with the natal moon in Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio are undergoing Shani Sade Sati. Those born with the natal moon in Leo, because of Saturn retrograde, are under this influence until August 4, 2012. Those whose natal moon (nakshatra) is Utthara, Hastha, Chitra, Swathi, Visakha, Anuradha, and Jyestha are undergoing Shani antardasha (subdasha) in Shani Mahadasha (primary dasha).
Vedic astrology prescribes certain remedies, Pujas, and mantras that can be recited to please Lord Saturn and limit the effect of Saturn’s Sade Sati. This is a 19 day Puja that, according to the Vedas, is the perfect remedy for Sade Sati.
The Pandit performs Saturn mantra japam 19,000 times and Mahamruthyunjaya japam 10,000 times.
Then, on the 19th day, a Havan for Saturn is performed.
